More about the four girls in Birmingham

Someone asked about the four girls from the Birmingham bombing at Sixteenth Street Baptist Church. Here are pictures of them. They were Denise McNair (11), Addie Mae Collins (14), Carole Robertson (14) and Cynthia Wesley. Sadly, twenty-three other people were injured in the explosion as well.

Thanks, Jodi, for posting this. The students had a lot of questions when they read about the church bombing. It's hard to imagine the hatred that would cause this.

I bet many of the students read Watsons Go To Birmingham in Elementary school. They might remember the bombing story at the end of the book. We saw the church where that story takes place. The girls were so sad to think they could have been the girls who were murdered.

Oh my gosh! That's so sad. Addie Mae Collins looks like an adorable girl. So do the rest. This is heartbreaking.

That is really sad I felt like I was ready to cry and it was so courageous for those kids to have the corage to boycott and I don't get why the white people were so mean to the african american's and did the white people think the african american's had a illness or they thought that black people just because of the color of their skin color they thought it was o.k. to tease them and make it so the african american children could not be friends with the white children. If I was one of those african american children I would say I don't care what you call me or what you say to me I am proud to be black and I don't care if you try and kill me go ahead and kill me if you think it would be best for your children. signed J.D.J

The people who bombed the four girls were members of the Ku Klux Klan. For those of you who were wondering, the bomb went of in the basement of the girls restroom while the girls were getting ready for church. I think we were all really sad when we were at the church.
